The outcome long since decided, Jamestown Community College’s Alexis Rodenbaugh attempted an outlet pass in the closing seconds of Sunday’s Crossover Classic.

It was picked off by a Corning CC player.

At the next dead ball, the North East, Pennsylvania sophomore approached the Jayhawks’ bench and offered a mea culpa.

“That’s my bad,” she said to her coach, Travis Wells. “Sorry.”

The Jayhawks sophomore truly had nothing to apologize for the way she played.

Not in the least.

Less than 24 hours after suffering what appeared to be a serious ankle injury, Rodenbaugh looked none the worse for wear in helping Jamestown CC to a 69-50 NJCAA non-conference victory over Corning CC at the Physical Education Complex.

The win improved the Jayhawks’ record to 3-0 — their third victory in less than 72 hours — and it was the result of some outstanding all-around play for the third straight game.

Nicole Johnson scored 17 points, to go along with three assists and four steals; Rodenbaugh had 14 points, five assists and three steals; and Taylor Phelps added 14 points and five steals. All three of them played key roles from the opening tip when the hosts raced to a 27-5 first-quarter lead. Equally as impressive was the fact that eight different players scored in the first 10 minutes as well.

The Red Barons never got closer than 17 points the rest of the game.

“With this group that is what we expect,” Wells said. “We have a year under our belts and that’s where we want to be.”

About the only suspense was whether Rodenbaugh, a returning Region 3 Division II first-team all-star, would experience any lingering effects from the injury that resulted in her limping off the court in the first half of the Jayhawks’ win Saturday over Broome CC.

“It was definitely the worst sprain I’ve ever had,” Rodenbaugh said. “Going into today’s game it was real sore and I knew I had to rely on my teammates and just have to power through it.”

That’s exactly what she did.

In fact, Rodenbaugh looked better and better as the game went along, especially when it appeared that a Corning CC player was going to go to the basket for an easy layup early in fourth quarter. Instead, Rodenbaugh, pursuing at an angle, blocked the attempt. For good measure, she drilled a jumper and turned her steal into a layup for her 13th and 14th point of the in the final minute.

“What I know is if I get knocked down, I’m going to get back up and I’m going to get back up 10 times stronger,” she said.

Ironically, Rodenbaugh didn’t take to basketball easily after playing for the first time in middle school.

“I was horrible, absolutely horrible. I sat on the bench every game,” she said. “Going into high school if I wanted to be a good player and actually play, I had to put in the work and I had to do it every play, every second. … If you’re not going 100 percent, there’s no point doing it.”

There was no questioning her effort yesterday.

“We’re blessed to have her,” Wells said.

Jamestown CC returns to action Thursday when it entertains Pitt-Titusville at 5 p.m.
