Bonnies Drop Final Game In Caymans

GEORGETOWN, GRAND CAYMAN — Having just seven scholarship players in a three-games-in-three-days tournament is not a recipe for success. That held true again Wednesday as St. Bonaventure dropped its final game in the Cayman Islands Classic to Akron, 61-49, at John Gray Gym.

The Bonnies trailed by five points early in the second half when Akron scored six straight points to open a 38-27 lead. St. Bonaventure went cold, scoring just three points over the first 7:59 of the second half. By that point, Akron had pushed its lead to 48-30.

Despite the morning (11 a.m.) tip-off, the game began well for the Bonnies as they scored the first seven points. The Bonnies led 9-3 after Nelson Kaputo’s layup at the 15:15 mark, but Akron’s Daniel Utomi got hot, making four three-pointers over the next four minutes as the Zips surged ahead 15-10.

Akron went up by as many as 11 points in the first half but St. Bonaventure closed to within 30-23 at halftime.

Utomi went 5-6 from long range in the first half and ended the day 6-9, totaling a game-high 22 points.

The Bonnies, who dropped to 1-5 on the season, again played without three injured starters, senior forwards Courtney Stockard and LaDarien Griffin and freshman swingman Dominick Welch. Junior forward Melkisdek Moreaux has not played yet this season due to a knee injury.

Kaputo led the Bonnies with 14 points. Freshman point guard Kyle Lofton finished with 13 and Ngalakulondi totaled 11.

Junior guard Jalen Poyser, who was named to the All-Tournament team, was limited to four points and four rebounds. Poyser averaged 16.3 points per game in the Cayman Islands Classic.

NOTES: Freshman point guard Kyle Lofton scored in double figures in all three games in the tournament, averaging 15.3 points per game. He also totaled 10 assists, 10 rebounds and four steals in the Classic. … Ngalakulondi is now averaging 6.7 points and 6.7 rebounds for the season. … St. Bonaventure will return home tonight and have a week off from competition. The Bonnies’ next game is Nov. 28 at home against Canisius.
