JCC Men Pick Up First Win

WATERTOWN — Jamestown Community College controlled play to pick up its first win of the season, 2-1, over Jefferson CC in NJCAA Region 3 Division III men’s soccer action Sunday.

The Jayhawks opened the scoring nine minutes into the game when Alex Beuke scored from 25 yards out off a pass from Kyle Greswell.

Greswell made it 2-0 seven minutes into the second half when he scored from 8 yards out off a pass from Ross Venman.

The Cannoneers made things interesting late when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Jamestown CC keeper Jakob Moore made the initial save, but was ruled to have moved off his line early, giving Jefferson CC’s Caleb Mueller another attempt, which he converted.

“The defense played really, really well,” Jamestown CC coach Pat Anderson said. “It was kind of an unfortunate penalty kick. It didn’t look like anything too serious. … It was a little frustrating, but it worked out. We didn’t give them any really good looks after that.”

The Jayhawks outshot Jefferson CC, 31-8, and were awarded six corner kicks.

Moore made four saves for Jamestown CC while Gio Ortiz made 12 saves for the Cannoneers (1-12-0, 1-12-0).

“We’ve had several games where we controlled things,” Anderson said, “but we managed to win this one, which was nice.”

The Jayhawks (1-12-3, 1-10-1) return to action at home Wednesday against Niagara County CC (2-9-1, 2-9-1) at 2 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
