Jayhawks, SUNY Adirondack Tie, 1-1
Despite “dominating the whole game,” according to head coach Pat Anderson, Jamestown Community College’s men’s soccer team was only able to get out of their NJCAA Region 3, Division III matchup with SUNY Adirondack with a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon.
Nimish Gounder put the Jayhawks (0-3-2, 0-3-1) on the board in the 58th minute when he headed home Che Boag’s free kick from nearly 40 yards out.
In the 65th minute, the Timberwolves (1-2-2, 1-2-1) tied the game as Greg Maccharulo broke in on a semi-breakaway from 12 yards out and beat Jamestown CC keeper Jakob Moore to the low corner of the net.
The game remained tied through regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime sessions.
For postseason seeding purposes, the teams played a penalty-kick shootout, which the Jayhawks won, 4-2.
Michael Andalora, Gounder, Beuke and Moore scored for Jamestown CC in the shootout. After scoring on its first and third attempts, the SUNY Adirondack shooter missed the net on his team’s fourth attempt and Moore buried his opportunity to win it.
The Jayhawks held a 21-6 shot advantage, including 13-4 on net. Jamestown CC also had 12 corner kicks to the Timberwolves’ two.
“It was a game played in their end, we just couldn’t find the net and find a goal,” Anderson said. “It was basically a game we thought we should win, unfortunately we weren’t able to finish and make that happen.”
Ethan Otoupal made 12 saves for SUNY Adirondack.
The Jayhawks return to action Wednesday with an 8 p.m. matchup against Finger Lakes CC at Canandaigua Academy. On Saturday they will travel to Corning CC before going to Lorain County CC next Sunday.
