Mullen, Brown, Blecha Cited

Local Trio Are NYSSWA First-Team Selections

SYRACUSE — The New York State Sportswriters Association released its all-state baseball selections this week and players from the western Southern Tier were well-represented.

Sam Mullen of Silver Creek, Ronald “Bubba” Brown of Brocton and Brock Blecha of Franklinville are at the head of the class as the area trio were named first-team all-state selections.

Mullen, representing Class C, led the Black Knights to a 14-8 record and a Section VI championship. For his part, Mullen batted .527 and slugged .800, finished with 29 hits including seven doubles, a triple and two home runs and 14 RBIs.

Brown and Blecha are first-team selections in Class D.

Brown led Brocton to a 17-3 record and a berth in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinals. On the mound he struck out 65, walked 16 and yielded 29 hits in 38 innings pitched. Offensively, he batted .292, slugged .625 and scored 18 runs.

Blecha hit .386, belted two home runs, drove in 14 and posted a 5-2 record on the mound with a 1.20 earned run average.

The area produced other all-state players.

Joining Mullen in Class C, are Cassadaga Valley’s Connor Crabtree, a second-team selection; Silver Creek’s Zack Rybak, who was named to the third team; Silver Creek’s Alex Bogosian, who was chosen to the fifth team; and Chautauqua Lake’s Kyler Majka, who was named to the fifth team.

Crabtree led the Cougars to a 7-8 record with a .579 batting average. He scored 20 runs, had 22 hits, including eight doubles, and drove in 15 runs. Rybak batted .348, slugged .379 and collected 23 hits, including a pair of doubles; and Bogosian batted .387, slugged .507 and collected 29 hits, including seven doubles and one triple.

In Class B, pitcher Derrick Walters of Fredonia was named to the sixth team after posting an 8-0 record, and giving up just 14 hits and five runs in 41• innings to finish the year with a 0.51 ERA. He was also chosen the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West pitcher of the year.

Frewsburg had two all-state representatives in Class D. Trent Gray was a third-team selection, while Aaron Hair was named to the fourth team. Other choices were Jacob Peter of Franklinville and Trent Mihalko of Pine Valley, who batted .489 were third- and fourth-team choices respectively.
