Host Team Gearing Up For Action

Head coach Jay Grann has put together the team he believes will proudly represent the area in the upcoming Babe Ruth 16-18 Year-Old World Series to be hosted by Jamestown at Diethrick Park later this summer.

The team will be named Southern Tier and include athletes from Chautauqua County, Cattaraugus County and northwest Pennsylvania after the local league expanded to give more athletes the opportunity to play summer baseball.

The tournament will take place Aug. 4-11 and include champions from eight regions across the United States in addition to a Western New York champion and Southern Tier host team. The teams will be split into two divisions — the American and National.

Fredonia has the most representation on the host team with three players. Reid Tarnowski will see time at shortstop and on the mound while left-hander Trey Swartz will play first base and also see time on the mound. Outfielder Tyler Winchell also hails from Fredonia.

Jamestown pitcher Bryce Jackson will be joined by teammate Andrew Pumford, who could see time all over the diamond as a utilityman.

Kyler Majka of Mayville will likely play second base while Easton Tanner of Bemus Point could also see time at second base and on the mound.

Silver Creek will be represented by Chris Williams at second base and in the outfield. Williams played for Coach Matt Cummings at Jamestown Community College this year. Also from Silver Creek will be catcher Sam Mullen, who could also see time on the mound.

Frewsburg will be represented by corner infielder Mark Mammoser, who played for Grann and the Bears this spring. Outfielder/pitcher Caleb Caldwell will also represent Frewsburg, but he played for Cummings at Jamestown Community College this year.

Adam Goot will be the lone Cassadaga Valley representative on the roster. He will see time at third base and possibly on the mound.

Portville will send a pair of players and its coach to Jamestown this summer. Adam Wray will see time on the mound while Nick Stein will likely play somewhere in the outfield. Panthers head coach Mike Matz will handle the Southern Tier pitching staff for Grann. Stein played this past year for Finger Lakes CC.

Dunkirk will be represented by second baseman Lucas Porpiglia while Olean will send outfielder/pitcher Dylan Vincent and outfielder Garrett Boldt to the team. Boldt played for Niagara County CC this past year.

Finally will be catcher Brock Conn, who hails from North East, Pennsylvania.

Brenin Payne of Falconer will coach first base while Angelo Marra will coach third base.

Southern Tier — playing in the American Division — will open with the 7:30 p.m. game Saturday, Aug. 4 against the champion of the Midwest Plains. On Sunday, Aug. 5, the host team will take on the Southeast winner at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, Aug. 6, Southern Tier will play the winner of the New England region at 7:30 p.m. before the host team has its off day on Tuesday, Aug. 8. Grann’s squad will complete round-robin play Wednesday, Aug. 9 against the Pacific Southwest region winner at 7:30 p.m.

The National Division will feature the winners of the Ohio Valley, Southwest, Middle Atlantic and Pacific Northwest regions as well as the Western New York champion.

Each team will play four round-robin games during the first five days of play with one off day. A tie in the standings will be broken by head-to-head records and then fewest total runs allowed.

After pool play, the top three teams in each division will advance to a single-elimination bracket with the top seed on each side receiving a bye into the semifinals.

All of the out-of-town teams stay with Host Families. The Host Committee is still in need of Host Families for the upcoming World Series. If you or someone you know has the ability to host 2-3 players, the committee asks you to email hostfamily@jamestownworldseries.org or call Kathy McMaster at 488-0928.

The Southern Tier host team will be holding a fundraiser at Five Guys Burgers & Fries at the Chautauqua Mall on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. Customers must mention that they are there for the Southern Tier Baseball Team.

The host team will also be playing an exhibition game against the Jamestown Jammers of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League next Sunday at 6 p.m. Admission for the exhibition game will be $3 at the door.
