Gray Drives In Five As Bears Top Cougars
FREWSBURG — Trent Gray had a bases-clearing three-run triple and a game-ending two-run double as Frewsburg beat Cassadaga Valley, 16-6, in non-league baseball action Thursday.
The Cougars led 5-2 after two innings, before the Bears (2-0, 0-0) rallied for 14 runs over the final three innings.
In the third, Frewsburg freshman Jack Yost drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, Nick Marsh scored on a wild pitch and Yost scored when Reid Bjork reached on an error before sophomore Aaron Hair’s two-run double gave the Bears a 7-5 lead they would never relinquish.
With Frewsburg leading 10-5 in the fourth, Gray hit a three-run triple to center field scoring Nolan Brink, Bjork and Hair.
In the sixth, Yost doubled and Brink walked in front of Bjork’s two-run double to right field. Two batters later, Gray’s double to left-center put the hosts up by 10.
Tim Wright earned the win in relief, throwing three innings while allowing no hits and a walk. He struck out four.
Chase McIntire had two hits and three RBIs while David Peterson also had two hits and two runs scored for the Cougars (0-1, 0-0).
Adam Goot took the loss while combining with McIntire for six strikeouts on the mound.
PINE VALLEY WINS OPENER
RIPLEY — Pine Valley won its first game of the season, 7-5, in a non-league matchup against Chautauqua Lake.
The Thunderbirds (0-2, 0-1 CCAA Division 1 West) led 4-1 after the first three innings, tallying three runs in the third inning off Dakota Loop, the starting pitcher for the Panthers.
Pine Valley (1-0, 0-0 CCAA Division 2 East) took the lead in the top of the fourth inning, scoring five runs. Loop led off the inning with a single and stole second base, before coming in on a base hit by Corey Ellis. After three straight walks, Kevin Hunt drove in two runs on a single to tie the game at four apiece. Hunt later scored on a passed ball to take the lead, and Pine Valley eventually added another run.
“That was a huge uplifting hit,” Pine Valley coach Chris Buczek said. “We were waiting for it all day.”
After a Chautauqua Lake run in the bottom half of the inning made the score 6-5, Brody Sercu took the mound for Pine Valley and shut the game down. Sercu threw three shutout innings to close out the game for the Pine Valley win.
Noah Webb was charged with the loss for Chautauqua Lake after allowing the five runs in the fourth inning. Cody Triana and Bryce Rowe each allowed one run, while combining for 10 strikeouts in 3• innings pitched between the pair. Nate Engdahl and Zach Martin each pitched 1ª scoreless innings for the Thunderbirds. Brendon and Bryce Rowe each had doubles at the plate while Luke Waters and Joe Gustafson each had RBI singles.
