Chautauqua Hurricane Jr. Wins YMCA Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament

The YMCA Teen Center hosted its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Tournament for teens participating in area youth programs. Seven teams from organizations including the Jamestown YMCA, Jamestown Boys and Girls Club, Dunkirk Salvation Army, GA Home and Youth Advantage Buffalo participated in the daylong tournament. The championship went to Chautauqua Hurricane Jr. (Dunkirk Salvation Army) coached by Eric Barnes who defeated YMCA Teen Center Black coached by Joe Michishima in the final game. This daylong tournament is the kick off to a longer season which gives teens who are not part of a school-based basketball team the opportunity to be part of an organized team, develop character, and receive academic accountability. Event organizer John Barber said, “The boys from the Chautauqua Hurricane Jr. represented the poise, self-control, and respect for others we all want to see in athletes on this holiday. Great character leads to the great winning and these boys should be proud of themselves.” Submitted photo
