Defending Champ Falconer Opens Season With Victory

FALCONER – Defending Section VI finalists Jake Penhollow and Cameron Page opened their 2014 wrestling seasons in style Wednesday night as defending Division 1 champion Falconer defeated Dunkirk, 51-18.

Penhollow pinned Josiah Rosplock in 1:55 at 195 pounds and Page earned a major decision over Troy Smith-Petrella at 126 pounds as the Golden Falcons (1-0) won all but four weight classes.

“We saw some good things,” said Drew Wilcox, Falconer coach. “The mistakes that were made are correctible.”

Other pins for Falconer included Dylan Ingrao at 152 pounds, Corey Keefe at 160 pounds and Zach Mower at 182 pounds.

Dunkirk (0-1) received wins via the pin from Bryan Martinez at 170 pounds, Alex Jones at 220 pounds and Nick Jones at 285 pounds.

Falconer returns to action this weekend when it takes part in the Jarvis Memorial Tournament in Athens, Pennsylvania.

CATTARAUGUS – The Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds beat Cattaraugus-Little Valley in high school wrestling action by a score of 57-23.

Roger Williams, Trent Howard, and D.J. Hamrick all recorded pins for the Thunderbirds while Dominique Rammelt picked up a win by decision.

Both Randy Grey and Caleb Wares collected mat wins for Cattaraugus-Little Valley. Sam Grey picked up a decision at 106 pounds.

FORFEITS DOMINATE MATCH

FREDONIA – Due to illness on both teams, the Division 1 high school wrestling meet between the Southwestern Trojans and Fredonia Hillbillies featured just five matches.

In the end, Fredonia prevailed, 57-30.

Fredonia’s Jakeb Kelly won his 132-pound match with a 30-second pin over Charlynn Proctor-Burch. At 182 pounds, Steve Mignoli topped Joe Lindberg, 5-1.

The Hillbillies (1-0, 2-0) were also aided by eight forfeits.

“Because of who they had out and who we had out, we had only a few matchups,” Fredonia coach Ross Conti said. “It was just bad timing for everyone.”

Southwestern (0-2) earned pins from Guiseppe Hoose at 138 pounds, Wyatt Johnson at 145 pounds and Chase Stevenson at 99 pounds.
