Don’t Forget About Tuesday’s Caregiver Brunch

Question: I have been taking care of a family member with dementia for a while, I am worried we are not doing enough. Where can I turn to get information and maybe help with the care?

Answer: First, I always say “Thank You” to all Caregivers. You are making the life of someone else better.

We have so many seniors in our community who are able to stay at home through the help of family, friends and neighbors. I want to reinforce how glad I am that you are asking for help. For anyone who has provided care for another person, you know how draining it can be at times. It is rewarding, but it can be difficult. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help!

Many times, throughout our lives we face significant changes; graduations, first jobs, first car, marriage, babies, so many things. Most of these are celebrated and these celebrations offer opportunities for others to “share” their expertise. When it comes to caring for a family member, we don’t get this ‘shower of support’. It is usually a gradual change in expectations and responsibilities. This gradual change can lead up to a significant amount of time and energy. Don’t let this overwhelm you. I say get help early and often.

There are many resources in our area. It is simply a matter of looking for the help you need and then letting them help.

In the situation where you are dealing with Dementia, I would like to suggest the Alzheimer’s Association. Whether or not your loved one has the specific Alzheimer’s diagnosis is not required to get assistance from the wealth of knowledge and support they can give to you.

The Alzheimer’s Association office is in Williamsville, but they sponsor trainings, caregiver support groups and events in our part of WNY.

On Tuesday, July 9 there is one of these events, a Caregiver Brunch and I would like to encourage you to attend. This Caregiver Brunch will be from 12 to 2 at the Chautauqua Center, 107 Institute St. in Jamestown. You must RSVP, so I recommend calling them at 800-272-3900, or visit the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY website for more information, www.alz.org/wny

This website offers lots of resources and educational information. You can also research events happening near you, like the Caregiver Brunch on July 9.

The Caregiver Brunch will be offering light refreshments, along with guest speaker, Julie Whitbeck-Lewinski of Care Patrol. There will be information and takeaway resources to help you handle your situation in the best way possible.

You have many resources available to your Office For Aging, NY Connects, Family Service of Chautauqua Region, Home Care agencies, Adult Day Programs, Professionals in the field, like Geriatric Care Managers, and Social Workers, as well as pastors. Family and friends can also be a wealth of support and knowledge.

There is not a right or wrong way to provide for those we love and care for, each situation is different. As their needs change, your options also change. What works today, may not work tomorrow. What fails today, may work a month from now.

The important thing to remember is that you are doing your best and there is help out there for you. Reach out to get some help and it will make your situation even more successful. Reaching out to help is not a sign of failure. Reaching out is a sign of strength. You don’t want your family member to need something when there is a solution out there. I know that as a Caregiver you help others when they were are need. Let someone help you now when you need it. The old saying continues to be true; “Many hands make light work” Let others help you to be successful.

Definitely make a reservation to attend this Caregiver Brunch and find out more information about resources that can make your situation more manageable. We look forward to seeing you!
