Why Tax Should Support Libraries
We need our libraries more than ever, and we need to ensure we fund it in a manner that keeps them open for everyone. Since New York State Education Department does not allow libraries to charge user fees, we are asking for our community’s support. A few dollars a year is a small ask with a huge benefit.
Why should libraries remain ‘free’ or tax supported?
Libraries are more than just books. They are the central repository of our knowledge as a society. They bear the torch of truth and facts. With so much misinformation on social media platforms and supposedly free online content, libraries help separate fact from fiction; allow various opinions and perspectives to be heard; and allow people to learn and dream. This allows people to broaden their perspective and help them achieve their life goals. This learning environment allows a society to stay truly free.
Libraries provide social infrastructure that is crucial to our communities by providing programming, resources, and events that improve our local economy, fosters collaboration, and improves the health and wellbeing of our people.
Communities that fund libraries through taxes, will ensure the library serves everyone rather than a select few. Libraries that have user fees will only have content that is beneficial to a small and limited group. This turns into an exclusive club instead of serving everyone. When a community funds their library, they are investing in their family and friends, helping them achieve their goals which in turn benefits society in numerous ways. Libraries should serve everyone. 1) Elderly use libraries as a safe social space where they can feel engaged which means longer, healthier lives. 2) Adults use libraries to build new skills and obtain higher paying jobs. 3) Teenagers learn new technology getting ready to enter the workforce. 4) Children supplement their schooling and do research for classwork. 5) Young children learn to read in preschool activities and programs.
Libraries change as communities change and provides a gathering place that holds a community together. COVID, the rise of social platforms, and other world events are isolating and dividing us. Our libraries are the one area we can come together as one community to benefit all and safeguard our values and knowledge for future generations. Librarians are ‘people champions’ for the community around them. They are the most friendly, helpful, knowledgeable resource in their community helping people achieve their goals. Tax supported libraries means the community has a hub that supports the community without regards to religion, politics, or other potentially dividing facets.
Libraries “change lives” by sharing knowledge in a safe, social institution based on truth. This in turn means we drive innovation, collaboration, and education that is both good for the economy and the health and well-being of our people. Unlike other government spending programs, you can go visit a library any time you want and know exactly where your dollars are being spent. You can use the library for your own benefit, your family and neighbor’s benefit, and know that you are protecting the very heart of our community for future generations.
