Role models for young people need to be closely examined

To The Reader's Forum:

I’m a proud graduate of Cornell University, and a member of a fraternity still active on campus. I lived in the fraternity house for three years while an undergraduate at Cornell. So I know first-hand what kind of culture can exist in both fraternity and sorority houses on college campuses.

Much has been written and said the past several days about the alleged heinous gang rape of “Jane Doe” that took place at another fraternity house at Cornell in 2024. I’m as concerned, if not more concerned, than most because of my long association with this University.

I’m a former member of the Cornell University Council, and a current member of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Dean’s Advisory Council. Previously, I was a member of the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean’s Advisory Council. I contacted the University as soon as I heard the news, expressed my concern and began asking questions.

The one missing piece in all the outrage I’m seeing relates to the kind of role models our young people are being offered during these times.

The President of the United States has been tried and convicted of 34 crimes, yet he remains in office. Several other members of the Administration and Supreme Court have dark and troubling pasts, and other elected officials from both parties have had sexual abuse allegations made against them.

And then there’s this thing called the Epstein Files.

We have little accountability left in this country and it appears that anyone in power can do anything that they want, without repercussions or consequences.

So in case you find this all to be just a coincidence or anomaly, I’d ask you to respectfully think again and pay attention to who our young people are now modeling their behavior after.

Please vote in November, and vote wisely. Our young people deserve better.

Jane Doe deserves better.

And so does America.

Sincerely,

Jeff Winton
