Trump Does Not Have A ‘Powerful Mandate’

Editor's Corner

To The Reader’s Forum:

Well, contrary to the Trump claim that he had won a “powerful mandate” as a result of the 2024 election, he has no such “mandate” other than the fact he won the election. The reality, although small one, is that greater than 50% of voters actually voted for candidates other than Trump! Republicans claim the 2024 race was where they secured a “landslide” when the results reveal that this was one of the closest presidential elections of the post-World War II era.

As to the Electoral College, Trump won in 2024 with 312, yet Biden won in 2020 with 306 even though he had over 7 million more actual votes. A “landslide” would have been won by Ronald Reagan in 1984 – 525 to 13.

While I preferred Harris to win the election, I am first writing about Trump’s public suggestion that he might use military force to take Greenland from Denmark and take the Panama Canal from Panama. So, is Trump suggesting we should go to war with Denmark and Panama? Is Trump, who claimed he is a peacemaker during his former presidency and claimed other presidents were involved in foreign wars now intending to use war to get what he wants? Good grief!

While we’re at it, are Trump voters embracing Trump’s change of mind that inflation (e.g. the price of eggs) is no longer relevant – that inflation is something he cannot change although he made it a foundation of his candidacy? A double good grief!

As to Cabinet picks, leading a list of unqualified candidates, Pete Hegseth (DoD) has been accused of sexual assault, religious extremism and drunkenness; RFK, Jr. (HHS) had/has a brain worm and discredited anti-vaccine theories; Tulsi Gabbard (DNI) secretly met with Bashar Assad deposed leader of Syria; Elon Musk (new, non-government DOGE) is being sued by fired, former employees; Linda McMahon (Education) has been accused of sexual exploitation of children while former CEO of WWE; Kristi Noem (DHS) is a self-described dog and goat killer; Kash Patel (FBI) wants to defund the agency and use it to retaliate against political opponents. These “I hire only the best” choices for Trump are about as bizarre as can be imagined! Yes, it’s triple good grief!

I recall a neighborhood sign in 2020 that read. “Don’t blame me, I voted for Trump”. For me in 2024, just substitute “Harris” for Trump!
