Focusing On A ‘Balanced Approach’

Readers' Forum

To The Reader’s Forum:

The editorial in the June 24, 2024, edition of The Post-Journal focused upon the editors’ long advocacy of “a balanced approach when it comes to Chautauqua Lake.” Later in the editorial it suggests that “It is important state law reflects the balance needed between ecology and economy….” The need for a healthy lake is not being focused upon in the advocacy for balance.

The balance that the paper and the political establishment advocate for has yet to be defined by those entities. Rather, it simply sounds good and logical and thus becomes the justification for actions that may or may not be good for Chautauqua Lake’s long-term health.

Our local economy and the community’s wellbeing is dependent upon a healthy Chautauqua Lake. Everyone needs to change the conversation to one that is about sustaining and improving Chautauqua Lake’s health. We need to be mindful of the factual science reporting that is occurring and to the principles of healthy lake management. This conversation has yet to seriously occur throughout the community. It needs to occur and it needs to occur immediately. We also need to change the conversation from today’s needs to long-term sustainability needs which will then direct today’s actions. Chautauqua Lake is facing serious health issues which need to be addressed right away in order to have a healthy lake and strong local economy moving forward.
