Most anyone who spends 44 years in a job undoubtedly has a great mastery of that job.
After his closing presser after the NATO conference, amongst the gaffs and stutters that have marred his career, Biden showed a masterful command of foreign policy. In contrast, Trump’s bombastic, ad hominem style is thin on policy. He Gish gallop’s his opponents to utter frustration, which has served him well.
This was the problem with the debate. While both candidates are elderly, Biden is a serious politician while Trump is an entertainer. Biden has arguably forgotten more about policy and governance than most of us will every know. Trump hasn’t changed his playbook for his entire adult life.
It is easier to tear down than to build up, easier to frustrate an opponent than to thoughtfully engage them on the policy. Biden entered the debate prepared to delve into the issues, while Trump was there to entertain and frustrate.
Based upon the stank face Biden wore for most of the debate, Trump was successful. Attacking others is not something that Biden is known for, while it is Trump’s bread and butter.
If you come to play baseball and the pitcher starts lobbing water ballons at you, it would be fair to assume you wouldn’t be at your best.
