Fenton History Center, Museum Is A Local Gem

Readers' Forum

To The Reader’s Forum:

I hope Jamestown folks realize what precious gems you have in the Fenton Museum and History Center.

In November, I visited both while staying with friends in Jamestown, where my dad and grandfather grew up. I was looking for information about my great-grandfather’s service in the Civil War, but I couldn’t recall his Army unit.

Norman Carlson, Collections Manager, was just amazing. His encyclopedic knowledge of the History Center’s collection got me right to the record of my ancestor in the 49th NY Volunteer Regiment, including finding a regimental history book that specifically mentioned him (a copy of which I was later able to buy online). The museum itself is a wonderful trip back in time, especially going up in the cupola to look out over the city. The museum and history center are treasures of which Jamestown should be very proud, especially the knowledgeable staff and volunteers who serve there.
