Mayor Ballot Count Actions Appropriate

To The Reader’s Forum:

The Nov. 24th editorial critical of Mayor Eddie Sundquist representing fellow Democrat Regina Brackman at the County Board of Elections absentee vote count and subsequent hand count of all ballots was off the mark. Councilwoman Regina Brackman asked Eddie, an attorney, to represent her and of course he agreed. Eddie has experience in vote counts and given that the absentee ballots added to the vote totals and were critical in the election of his fellow party member, it was obviously a good thing that an experienced lawyer represented Regina in Mayville. Then the unexplained change in vote totals following the hand count of ballots only intensified the good sense of Regina asking lawyer Eddie to represent her in a non-city government capacity.

Further, it was reported to me that Republican County Committee Chair Nacole Ellis handled every single ballot as deputy GOP Election Commissioner in her work as a staffer for the Board of Elections. You’ll remember that Norm Green, when he served previously in the dual roles of Election Commissioner and Democratic County Chair, made it a point to not touch ballots not on the counting table and performed a management roll overseeing the bi-partisan staff work at the Board of Elections.

Finally, I doubt that Jamestown’s “small town politics” is as vindictive as your editorial states. Eddie works hard to get along with everyone while doing the people’s work. Until now, the City Council hasn’t previously engaged in the petty politics that your editorial seems to suggest. I hope this editorial does not signal some new partisan GOP direction.
