Voters Should Support Our Local Libraries

To The Reader’s Forum:

Libraries are the equalizers of society. Anyone with the ability to read and the desire to learn can find tremendous resources at a library. Issac Assimov, the prolific writer, is credited with this quote: “When I read about the way in which library funds are being cut and cut, I can only think that American Society has found one more way to destroy itself.” That is a strong statement but one worth thinking about.

There is a solution to budget cuts for libraries in our local area. On May 15, 2018, residents that are served by the Southwestern Central School District can vote to change the way funds are collected for Lakewood Memorial Library and Hazeltine Public Library. I urge any resident of Lakewood, Busti, West Ellicot, and Harmony who is qualified to vote and who supports the purpose and function of our local libraries to vote Yes in the lobby at Southwestern Central School District High School from 7 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 8 p.m. A Yes vote is a vote for more consistent funding and will ensure that our libraries will be able to provide their services into the future.
