Reader Applauds Efforts To Combat Climate Change
To The Reader’s Forum:
As we witness the terrible destruction caused by recent hurricanes, we’re reminded yet again of the pain and loss of life that extreme weather, made worse by climate change, is causing. Fortunately, scientists are figuring out new ways to use technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions all the time.
One method, called “anaerobic methane digesters,” would turn a harmful waste product into a valuable resource. This not only helps our environment, but creates energy and revenue for local farmers.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that captures 86 times as much heat as carbon dioxide. Methane emissions come from a variety of sources, including gas and oil pipelines, landfills, and manure produced by livestock — especially cows and sheep.
Rather than letting animal waste send methane into the atmosphere, anaerobic digesters use it to produce energy. This transforms manure from a source of pollution into a valuable commodity. Using manure digesters also decreases runoff in our waterways, which helps keep our water quality high.
Digesters are already in use around the world, and at last count there were 27 in New York State. Our congressman, Tom Reed, has joined Representatives Stefanik (NY-21), Katko (NY-24), Collins (NY-27), and Faso (NY-19) to co-sponsor the Agriculture Environmental Stewardship Act (H.R. 2853), which would provide tax incentives for farmers and electric cooperatives who invest in anaerobic methane digesters.
I applaud this effort, which would help address our climate challenges while putting money in the pockets of New York’s hard-working farmers.
