Will Trump Make America Great Again?
To The Reader’s Forum:
Trump supporters who accepted the notion that Mr. Trump would, in his own words, “make America great again,” have reason for concern.
Recent actions, comments and decisions from Trump, including cabinet nominees, have drawn criticism from around the country.
His labor secretary choice supports “robots” as an answer to manufacturing jobs. Is this what blue collar workers and supporters voted for? Did their hope for job change include this scenario? On the issue of a living wage, they ignored Trump’s opposition record. They should be very concerned.
The education secretary nominee would work to gut public schools in favor of more private and charter schools. That may be great for a few fortunate students and parents. But what of the rest?
One of the most unfit cabinet choices, Rick Perry, was reminded (during his campaign) that he supported closing the Department of Energy. The same post Trump has selected him to now oversee. Remember Perry was shamed as Texas governor for accepting “gifts” in return for political favors. Is that another example of “making America great again?”
The secretary of state nominee will be confirmed despite personal and business ties to the murdering dictator, Vladimir Putin. This would spell the end to sanctions imposed for Putin’s hacking our election process. This cabinet would be one of the most disfunctional cabinets ever confirmed, not to mention the most dangerous to our nation’s security.
As promised, Trump has taken steps to repeal the healthcare law for over 20 million insured Americans with no replacement plan in place. That may be “great” for the health care industry.
We’ve learned recently, after the election, of course, that we the American people will bear the tremendous expense for Trump’s great wall of Mexico. He has assured us Mexico will eventually reimburse us, simply stating — “believe me.”
First-time homebuyers will be hurt by Trump’s recent reversal of lower mortgage fees, put in place by President Obama. When will we see the “great again” part?
If you believed Trump’s “I will bring American jobs back to America” campaign promise, you might expect him to start with American jobs he and his family have been outsourcing since 2006, Bangledesh being one of their favorite sites. That “made in” label appears on Trump lines, including clothing, jewelry, perfumes and even furniture, along with other sites outside the country. The majority of Americans feel America is already “great,” and there is no need for empty campaign promises.
