State Still Has Work To Do On Involuntary Commitment

One reason the state budget was late was Gov. Kathy Hochul’s insistence on changes to the state’s involuntary commitment laws. While Hochul secured some of the changes she wanted, including some changes that could be beneficial in helping deal with some members of the city’s homeless population, it’s ironic that the governor was able to secure a policy change in the budget while the dollars and cents needed to provide space for involuntary commitment to actually happen didn’t make it into the state budget this year. Not everyone is in favor of all aspects of the St. Susan Center’s move from Water Street to downtown Jamestown. Zoning Board of Appeals members met recently to discuss a zoning variance requested by the center that would allow the center to locate refrigeration units closer to the property line of the former Jamestown Business College property than is included in the city’s code. Recent news that the court-disputed sale of the Hotel Lenhart is, we hope, a good development for the village of Bemus Point and those who look forward each summer to spending lazy summer evenings on the iconic rocking chairs of the venerable lakefront hotel. The Hotel Lenhart has has been a major fixture on Chautauqua Lake since the summer of 1882, when the hotel opened. An 1891 fire destroyed the original building with the current hotel built in its place. For the second time in less than a decade, one of downtown Jamestown’s tentpole events finds itself on the brink of extinction.
