Streets Project Should Include Fifth And Sixth

City officials are putting considerable time into the idea of safe streets - and we’re glad to see that Fifth Street residents have come before the City Council to advocate for changes in the area. “I have a concern from a resident who lives on Fifth Street, as you come off of Fairmount Street Bridge and come up over to come onto Fifth Street,” said Regina Brackman, D-Ward 3 and council president. “He’s just really saying that there seems to be a lot of accidents. He seems to be getting awakened in the middle of the night by police to see if he has camera footage.” The ...

Second Street Won’t Be As Painful This Spring

Last year at this time drivers and some businesses on Second Street were fuming - though business at tire and alignment shops was booming. It’s good to know that Second Street won’t be as big a headache early this year. The credit goes back to last year, when city officials, with the help of local state representatives Andrew Molitor and George Borrello, reached an agreement with the state to perform temporary repairs last year after Second Street began to look like the surface of the moon. That paving work took place in July, and City Council members said during last week’s ...

It’s Time For An End To CLCPA Foolishness

If you think power is expensive now, get a load of what it could look like in five years if New York Democrats don’t change their ways. According to a memo from Doreen Harris, NYSERDA president and CEO, the impact of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act could mean an additional $2.23 a gallon on top of the current prices by 2031 and fuel oil and natural gas costs could increase more than $4,000 a year. “Notwithstanding these cautions, the modeled price would lead to high burdens to New York households, especially those unable to install lower emissions ...

In 2020, it was voted the nation’s #1 “Best New Museum,” and in 2019, it was voted the #2 “Best New Attraction” while ranking as the #1 museum and #1 ticketed attraction in a USA Today poll. Community Support Still Needed For St. Susan Center

It was a surprise when St. Susan Center officials announced this week the center won’t be moving from Water Street to the former Jamestown Business College campus. There was a lot of excitement when the center was part of the announcement that the Conklin family had donated the former JBC campus to be used as a new home for the St. Susan Center and a new shelter for the UCAN City Mission. The part of the property that was to house St. Susan’s will need to find a new use that coexists with a shelter after the announcement Monday that the St. Susan Center will remain on Water Street ...

County Could Shift Taxes For Everyone

There was an interesting debate last week over an $8,000 increase to the income limit for Chautauqua County senior citizens to qualify for a property tax break. Legislator Dan Pavlock, R-Ellington, said the legislation proposed was not a “tax break” but more of a “tax shift,” because others will pay more since more seniors would be paying less. During committee meetings, Legislator Dalton Anthony, R-Frewsburg, noted that the more tax breaks are given to seniors, the more younger people have to pay. It was a notion that drew agreement from Legislator Fred Johnson, R-Westfield, ...
