Transparency Lacking For North County Water District Board Members
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli put the Northern Chautauqua County Water District on notice regarding its finances. Unfortunately, some of its board members are not getting the same information.
That was part of last week’s discussion that involved David Hazelton, who said he — as a board member — wants regular reports regarding the agency. “The way we were raked over the coals by the auditor, I’d like to know,” he said.
According to those at the meeting, because Hazelton is neither a supervisor nor mayor, he is not receiving those updates. It was recommended — obviously — that board members be privy to the information.
For the record, the district leaving Hazelton out of the loop on finances is downright insulting. He is one of the key individuals from Brocton-Portland who helped get the district in operation.
Hazelton has a right to be upset — as do users and non-users of the district. We have heard the complaints and published items regarding problems with Chadwick Bay Intermunicipal Water Works. DiNapoli’s audit points to some of those problems.
Even more reason for the transparency — with the board and public.
