Allen Park No Sledding Sign Is Confusing, Should Be Removed

Most people will admit Allen Park is perhaps the best remaining sledding hills there is in Jamestown.

That distinction used to belong to College Park, but construction of dorms on the Jamestown Community College left Allen Park as the – no pun intended – king of the hills.

Until a reminder this weekend by some who took their children to the hill for the first time we had forgotten there is a no sledding sign at the top of the hill. For the record, the city hasn’t actively enforced the no-sledding sign at Allen Park, and the sign really is in place to give police the ability to remove those who are acting unruly at the park. But this weekend’s confusion over whether or not the families were breaking a city ordinance by continuing the time-honored tradition of sledding near the bandshell makes us think the sign has to go. It’s a time-honored tradition to sled near the bandshell, and it’s not unusual to see dozens of children sledding on the hill when there is enough snow.

Enforcement of the sign, at that point, would appear to be selective enforcement. A better and more appropriate sign may be a sign warning against loitering or other behaviors that would give the Jamestown Police Department appropriate authority to police bad behavior in the bandshell area. But, in our view, it’s time for the no sledding sign to go.

Starting at $3.50/week.
