Jamestown Should Pay Attention To Fredonia’s Issues With E-Bike, Scooter Company

We hope Jamestown officials are paying attention to the issues Fredonia officials are having with scooter service.

The idea behind affiliating with an e-bike and e-scooter provider is sound — particularly in a city like Jamestown that has limited mass transit options available. At least during the summer months the bikes and scooters could make it easier for some to get around.

Fredonia’s scooters are certainly being used — 1,200 different people have used the scooters roughly 5,600 times and ridden about 8,000 miles since the service went online in August 2022.

But one has to wonder if Bird Bike Share is the right provider after reading about Fredonia’s issues with the company.

Officials in the north county village say there are problems with scooters being left all over the village, particularly in public rights of way like sidewalks or dumped in neighborhoods when people are done with them. Village Board members also complained the local Bird manager has a yard full of scooters, which village officials say is an eyesore for neighbors.

“For the convenience of a few, it’s putting a hardship on many,” Fredonia Trustee James Lynden said. “Of course there’s people enjoying them, but it’s an inconvenience to many others. I don’t know how to address that.”

Jamestown’s program is on hold until Bird Bike Share can find someone to manage the scooter and bike program locally. The delay should be used to make sure the city has limits in place to avoid the issues Fredonia is facing. If those issues can’t be avoided then maybe this is a deal that should be discarded.
