JCC Needs To Make It Easier To Live On Campus For International Students

Admitting more international students makes sense as Jamestown Community College looks to increase enrollment.

But JCC board members have to know they’re not providing the type of experience that makes it easy for international students to study here in Jamestown. Kudos to Alyssa Drozdiel, JCC student board member, for bringing some of those issues to light during a recent board meeting. We hope the rest of the board takes her message to heart.

JCC has dorms for international students, part of an initiative decades ago to reach out to students who don’t live in the direct Jamestown area. But the college doesn’t provide meal service on the weekends, so students who live on campus in one of the dorms have to fend for themselves Saturday and Sunday before the food court opens again Monday. Too often, students living in the dorms don’t have vehicles. Shuttle buses have restricted hours, particularly on weekends, so international students who are part of sports teams may find themselves missing the bus to Walmart, walking to Falconer to go to Tops or finding someone with a car to take them where they need to go.

It’s all well and good to focus on enrolling international students. The measure is paying off for JCC, which has roughly twice the international students as the State University at Fredonia. But it’s just as important to provide the type of experience that helps students get the most of their college experience. It’s something the board must address as it moves into the future.

Starting at $3.50/week.
