What Took The County Legislature So Long To Weigh In On Brooks Hospital’s Importance?

If you ever needed any indication about the lack of urgency by those elected to serve in the Chautauqua County Legislature, look no further than a vote on Wednesday. By unanimous decision, lawmakers approved a motion that supports the new build of the Brooks-TLC Hospital in the north county.

What took you so long?

Brooks-TLC’s new build has been a hot topic of discussion since 2016 and 2017, when the state set aside more than $70 million for the project. Almost hilariously, the belated motion approved notes that.

By the way, what is really a priority for the legislators in Mayville? Is it making sure they attend one or two meetings a month to receive their nearly $10,000 annual paycheck for part-time work — or is it being engaged with what is happening around them?

Fiscal difficulties by Brooks-TLC — and delays with the building — have been well documented by both county newspapers. How can legislators in the north county — for the last six years — barely acknowledge the problems facing that institution?

Brooks-TLC is in crisis due to the changing health-care landscape. Visionless county legislators would be facing the exact same crisis if not for their tradition of passing on tax hikes and increased spending plans to the constituents they serve.

It is enough to make residents sick. Good thing, at least for now, there is a hospital in the north county for that.

Starting at $3.50/week.
