BPU Should Do More To Help City Residents Deal With Extra Holiday Garbage
Most weeks, the majority of Board of Public Utilities customers should be able to fit their garbage ino the garbage cans provided by the BPU.
Those who can’t face the frankly lousy choice of taking their extra garbage to a transfer station in Falconer, spending an extra $14 a month for an extra can or $10 fee to have an extra garbage pickup scheduled.
While more expensive than the old way of handling garbage, the BPU’s updated policy on garbage pickup is reasonable. After all, some of the things people are throwing away — including discarded needles or other sharp items — shouldn’t be handled by anyone, and BPU workers had more than their share of injuries because people didn’t discard of such sharp materials in a safe manner.
But there is a problem one week a year that the BPU could do a little more to help customers solve.
We speak, of course, about holiday garbage collection. The 95-gallon containers may be enough for most customers’ weekly garbage, but they aren’t nearly big enough for many families to fit their regular refuse and holiday related garbage too. Those families find themselves asking family members to bring garbage over to their house — which isn’t exactly the stocking stuffer most family members have on their list — or loading garbage into their vehicles to take them to the transfer station.
It isn’t too much to ask that, one week a year, the BPU allow city residents who need an additional container to put their holiday garbage out in a non-BPU container to be lifted and dumped into a trash hauler. In our opinion, the BPU board should take a serious look at a one-week allowance of additional bags without an additional fee or trip to the transfer station.
Consider it a Christmas gift.
