Two of Mayor Eddie Sundquist’s budget vetoes up for discussion Monday deserve some consideration from the City Council, but only one should stand.

Sundquist’s concerns over engineering supplies may be worth reconsidering with the $52,964 in bond interest the city had included in the 2023 budget that doesn’t have to be paid. At the same time, if the city decides to override the engineering supplies veto the $5,600 could be taken from the contingency budget in 2023 if it ends up actually being needed.

The smart move is to take the entire bond interest money and use it to decrease the sales tax revenue projection to a more realistic increase of an additional $20,000 (do math adn put in a real amount). Both Sundquist and fiscally conservative Republicans have concerns with the aggressive sales tax projection included in the budget. Decreasing that projection makes a lot of sense.
