Curtailing Trucks On Summit Avenue Will Create Other Traffic Issues In Lakewood

We don’t blame Lakewood residents for being sick and tired of heavy truck traffic on Summit Avenue in the village.

Anyone who has traveled Summit Avenue knows the road isn’t meant for big vehicles, and those who bought homes there likely didn’t envision tractor-trailer traffic when they began making mortgage payments. One Winchester Road resident counted more than 100 construction vehicles using Summit Avenue at various points this summer.

So it’s hard to argue with the Lakewood Village Board’s decision to pursue limitations on trucks using some roads in the heart of the village. A public hearing will be held at 6:40 p.m. Sept. 26 on the matter. Exact wording has yet to be finalized, but the plan is to prohibit commercial vehicles, tractors and tractor-trailer combinations from using East or West Summit Avenue.

Restricting use of Summit Avenue only fixes part of the issue.

Fairmount Avenue traffic — already a pain in the summer — will only get worse if Summit Avenue isn’t being used to divert some of the traffic from Fairmount Avenue. Lakewood is well within its right to help residents fed up with truck traffic in their quiet neighborhood. But the next step should be joint meetings with the state Transportation Department, Lakewood, Busti and Ellicott officials to see if anything can be done to streamline traffic flows on Fairmount Avenue, particularly during the summer.

Lakewood is poised to fix one problem, but the solution will make another traffic problem worse. A holistic approach is really needed.
