It’s Been Quieter, But Jamestown Police Have Been Busier Than Ever

It’s been a quieter summer this year in Jamestown.

We’re sure some of that has to do with additional patrols in Jamestown neighborhoods that have focused on noise and safety. There has been a noticeable difference in vehicle and motorcycle noise even before nuisance and quality of life officers begin their work at JPD later this year.

“We’re taking a focus on a lot of the motorcycle issues that we were having,” JPD Capt. Scott Forster told council members last week. “Not only the noise and everything, but it’s a safety issue for everybody. We’re really focusing on that this summer and trying to knock that down a little bit.”

The focus is helping, as many city residents can attest.

But the department’s response and arrest statistics show it’s been anything but a quiet summer.

Weekly crime statistics released the same day Forster discussed nuisance crimes with the council show city police officers have responded to 3,331 offenses through July 30 — 4.8% more than the number of calls the department responded to through the same time in 2021 and 4.8% more than the department’s five-year average. The biggest increases have come in person and property crime, which have increased by 7.7% and 6.1%, respectively. There have been slight decreases in crime termed as against society and other. Arrests have also increased 19.8% over the past year from 2,107 to 2,524. Arrests in 2022 are trending higher than the city’s five-year average of 2,168.

So, yes, it’s been quieter summer — but that apparently depends on where you’re listening from.
