A New Playground In Celoron Is Worth Both Community’s And State’s Interest

As anyone who visited the recent Celoron Ribfest can attest, Lucille Ball Memorial Park is a lovely place for families to attend an event.

The log cabin building and lighthouse on the outskirts of the park are beautifully quaint, the Desi Arnaz Bandshell provides a nice stage for bands to perform on a balmy summer day, the boardwalk along Chautauqua Lake is a nice place to take a short stroll and the Harbor Hotel is a beautiful building.

The drawback to the park is the playground. There are no swings for children, and any parent knows that’s one of the first things children of a certain age look for. The playground equipment is past its prime and any bit of rain turns the playground area into a mud pit. As Scott Schrecengost, Celoron mayor, said recently, building the playground in a pit filled with wood chips resulted in a clogged drainage system as wood chips made their way into the drainage system.

Those who want to support the effort can attend a public meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Celoron Community Center to review plans and give their opinion and suggestions. Those who can’t attend but want to support the effort can send letters to the Village of Celoron, PO Box 577, Celoron, NY 14720-0577. Getting state money for a new playground isn’t the end of the process, it’s the beginning. A group will need to spearhead fundraising that the village isn’t allowed by law to do. So one way to help get the state’s attention is to show the public cares about this project and is willing to support it if the state, in turn, supports the village’s application.

New playground equipment is the missing piece for Lucille Ball Memorial Park. This isn’t an effort for tourists. It’s something that will improve the quality of life for Celoron families who won’t have to travel to Jamestown or Lakewood for a nice playground for their children to use in the summer.
