Property Owners Need More Than A Dollar And A Dream
The New York State Lottery used to say all it took to strike it rich was a dollar and a dream.
That’s been a motto for out-of-towners who gobble up properties in Jamestown, too. A few dollars and a dream can buy a lot here.
Unfortunately, that dream often becomes a nightmare.
One of those nightmares is found at 1061 Allen Street. The building was once part of the Crawford Furniture factory in Jamestown. When Crawford Furniture closed its manufacturing plant, it didn’t take long for Allen Street Development LLC, owner by Patricia and Richard Rusiniak of Cheektowaga, to buy the old building.
Since then, the building has been cited for junk and debris, code violations and failure to renovate or demolish. The back of the building is starting to collapse and there are concerns about hazardous materials and chemicals that are being stored in the building scattered throughout the site.
It’s time for this building to come down. Obviously, the Rusiniak’s have no real plan for its future, and the last thing anyone needs is a fire in an abandoned factory building that jeopardizes both city firefighters and a neighboring factory.
The mess at 1061 Allen Street has been years in the making. The city no longer has years to wait.
