More Foot Traffic Downtown Would Attract Food Truck Operators To City

There has been little appetite thus far for food trucks in Jamestown.

That’s surprising for all of the hullabaloo last year over creation of a food truck pilot program in the city that would govern where food trucks could operate and the consternation of restaurant owners over a new — and likely cheaper — form of competition for coveted dining dollars downtown.

Crystal Surdyk, city development director, said recently that there may be more interest as the economy continues reopening. Surdyk looked ahead to next year in particular.

City officials should keep one other alternative in mind, however — that food truck owners aren’t flocking to Jamestown right now because the city isn’t generating the type of foot traffic downtown to make locating downtown worth food truck owners’ while. Food truck owners don’t want to have to pay a fee — especially for a one- or two-time use — when there isn’t a good likelihood of making money during a day downtown?

It’s entirely possible that the effort to bring more food trucks into the city is putting the cart before the horse. In our opinion, putting more effort into boosting foot traffic in Jamestown will bring food truck operators downtown in an effort to cash in. And more foot traffic will benefit the rest of downtown, too.
