This Easter Is A Celebration Like No Other

Easter 2020 will be a celebration like no other for pastors, parishioners and families across the country.

Churches can’t host their traditional sunrise worship services followed by a hearty breakfast and the traditional morning service filled with the beautiful sounds of church choirs. Those who don’t regularly attend church find themselves missing out on egg hunts and other traditional spring events. We won’t be able to have our big family gatherings this year as we have in the past.

Easter will be different this year, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a reason to celebrate.

For believers in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the fact that the Easter celebration will take place online without the traditional pomp and circumstance doesn’t change the fact that tomorrow is a day to celebrate the resurrection of their Lord and Savior. Ashes, palm branches, beautiful flowers and traditional Easter hymns are ancillary aspects of Easter for churchgoers. Church isn’t a building, it is the act of coming together to worship however church families are able to do so.

COVID-19 has brought untold worry about health to millions of Americans this year and financial stress to millions more families. Everyone’s life has been disrupted in one way or another. Celebrating Easter in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic brings new focus to the reason churchgoers celebrate Easter. Tomorrow is an annual celebration of spiritual rebirth and the annual renewal of spring — a washing away of a harsh winter with warm, sunny days ahead.

This unusual Easter Sunday is an important moment of renewal for all of us amidst all of the COVID-19 craziness that surrounds us. Rebirth, both spiritually and as a function of the season, is what we make of it.

Happy Easter.
