Extending Williams’ Contract Was The Correct Decision

Jamestown Public Schools officials have made the right decision in extending Dana Williams’ time as interim Jamestown High School principal through the end of the 2020-21 school year.

The sudden closure of schools has created a difficult situation for children and for teachers. So it makes sense that Jamestown school officials are concerned about what will happen next year when schools reopen. After a tumultuous first half of the year at Jamestown High School, Williams has shown himself to be a calming voice for students and teachers.

Parents appreciated a letter Williams sent in late March to JHS seniors and posted a video to the district’s Facebook page to share with the entire high school his shared disappointment at the cancellation of the Battle of the Classes, a much-anticipated annual tradition at Jamestown High School.

Extending Williams’ memorandum of agreement as interim principal makes perfect sense. So does giving serious consideration to removing Williams’ interim tag for good.

If Jamestown officials have learned anything from the past year regarding the JHS principal’s position, it is that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence. The job should be Williams’, unless he doesn’t want the position long-term.
