Does the name Tarp Skunks stink, or is it sweeter than perfume?

We’re willing to bet many Jamestown residents — even those who haven’t stepped foot in Russell E. Diethrick Park in years — have an opinion one way or the other on the new name for the city’s summer collegiate baseball team.

Love it or hate it, the team’s marketing department has done its job simply by getting area residents and regional media to talk about summer collegiate baseball two weeks before the Super Bowl. Collegiate wood bat baseball wasn’t likely to make the television news during this time of year, but last week’s announcement by the Jamestown Tarp Skunks was picked up by Buffalo and Erie media outlets.

Whether the Tarp Skunks name ends up being good or bad depends on what happens next.

If the ballpark experience is good and the team is entertaining, then the Tarp Skunks name will end up one of those memorable monikers like the Lowell Spinners, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs or the Las Vegas 51’s.

But, if the experience is bad, well, let’s just say that gallons of tomato juice won’t wash away the stink.
