Lack Of Volunteers, Support Has Hurt Local Cemetery Associations
It is becoming a trend for many towns. Once volunteer organizations do not continue upkeep of cemeteries, the responsibility falls to the municipality.
Ripley recently, despite many efforts, is now tasked with overseeing the East Ripley Cemetery. Supervisor Doug Bowen said there are still many questions to be answered regarding care of the cemetery.
“I do not have a plan in place as to how we will move forward,” he said.
So while the town steps up, the bigger question becomes finding volunteers.
Cemetery Associations are one of the service organizations losing members. Others, including Kiwanis and some Rotary Clubs, also have disbanded.
Other leaders need to take note. Without community support, you may have the same problem very soon with your local cemetery.
