Goodell’s Constituents May Feel Left Out After Heastie Speech
There are likely few members of the state Assembly more different than Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, a Democrat from New York City, and Andrew Goodell, a Republican who lives six hours away from Albany.
It was interesting, then, that Heastie singled out Goodell during his inaugural address last week before the state Assembly.
“I have traveled across the state and I promise we will not forget any community in upstate New York — your district too, Mr. Goodell,” Heastie said near the end of his remarks opening the state legislative session.
It’s nice that Heastie name-dropped our local assemblyman, but we have a hard time seeing how Heastie’s priorities line up with those of many who live within the 150th Assembly District. There are valid questions about many of Heastie’s priorities this year, including the Child Victims Act, the DREAM Act and the New York Health Act, to name a few.
Heastie went on to say, “All the issues I have talked about here, as well as others not mentioned, enjoy widespread public support. During a time when people are losing faith in government, we will show the way and truly get the people’s business done. And I believe when all is said and done, we will have a list of accomplishments that will be unrivaled.”
We’re pretty sure, if that list of accomplishments is unrivaled, many in the 150th Assembly District will indeed feel forgotten — or ticked off.
