Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs up to the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation for its $10,000 grant to Meals on Wheels of the Jamestown Area. The additional funding, which came from the foundation’s Fund for the Region, will help provide meals to senior citizens who had been placed on a waiting list due to the increased need for senior meals in Chautauqua County. “Anything we can do to help keep area seniors happy and healthy in their own homes helps save the seniors money, both now and in the long run,” said Barrie Yochim, Meals on Wheels of the Jamestown Area executive director. “This funding directly impacts dozens of senior citizens who would have had to continue to wait for meal delivery service. They’ve been able to get the essential meals they need because of the Community Foundation.” The $10,000 grant will allow more than 2,500 additional meals to be served, which has impacted nearly 50 senior citizens.

Thumbs down to a traffic headache that will continue at least into this summer. Mayor Sam Teresi notified the Jamestown City Council earlier this week that the South Main Street bridge will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians when work resumes in a couple of months. County officials are hoping to have the project completed by the time the construction season ends in the fall. The bridge has been down to one lane for almost a year, with rush-hour delays a common occurrence. The closure can’t be helped, but it will certainly make life a headache for those of us who travel in and around downtown on a daily basis and for visitors whose GPS units may not alert them to the problem.

Thumbs up to the Zonta Club of Jamestown, which will bring the fifth annual LUNAFEST to Jamestown at 7 p.m. today at the Robert H. Jackson Center. The film festival highlights nine short films by women filmmakers. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, body image, relationships, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. Proceeds from LUNAFEST will benefit Zonta of Jamestown’s local scholarship named after MaryLou Costanzo, a former member of the Zonta Club of Jamestown, and Chicken & Egg Pictures, a nonprofit organization that supports women nonfiction filmmakers whose artful and innovative storytelling catalyzes social change. Film festivals like LUNAFEST or the Banff Film Festival, held annually at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, are important pieces of art and culture for our area. Kudos to the Zonta Club of Jamestown for continuing to bring the festival to Jamestown.
