Chautauqua County has broached the topic of having district courts — eliminating those in municipalities — for a more efficient system. And, while some local leaders will fight to protect their turf — as is often the case, others are open to the idea.

One of those entities includes Brocton, which last month met with Portland for its shared services committee and recommended a proposal to eliminate the village justice. While there may be some arguments against, the Brocton court is barely making a profit when factoring in its costs.

For now, if formally approved by both governments, that position would be absorbed by the town.

Brocton and Portland are shining stars in the municipal sharing arena right now. They are looking for solutions that are efficient and make sense for their taxpayers.

That is how all local elected leaders need to be thinking for the future.
