Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
Thumbs up to state Sen. Catharine Young and state Assemblyman Andrew Goodell for shepherding legislation through the state Legislature to eliminate the rest of the state Education Department’s misguided fine against the Panama Central School District. Not only should current students not have to be held responsible for a clerical error that had no effect on anyone or anything, the fine should not take any focus away from the serious educational and financial discussions Clymer and Panama residents are having as part of discussions to merge the districts. Goodell and Young once again have served their constituents well. Gov. Andrew Cuomo should sign the legislation and let everyone move on.
Thumbs down to use of an electronic device causing a car accident that sent a 23-year-old mother and her 3-year-old child to UPMC Chautauqua WCA Hospital. Luckily, injuries were minor in the crash Tuesday on Falconer-Frewsburg Road in Carroll. It is amazing, though, that people still put themselves and their children at risk using cell phones while they’re driving.
Thumbs up to Adam Pirtz and Isaac Gratto for their plans to reopen the Cockaigne Ski Resort in time for the 2018-19 ski season. The project, which totals $3.5 million, details the purchase of property, the construction of a 20,000-square-foot chalet and renovation of The Grainery, a former restaurant across from Cockaigne. In addition to maintaining horse trails on the property, Gratto told Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency board members they’re also looking to extend snowmobile trails to the facility while constructing a parking lot for snowmobilers and out-of-state visitors. Pirtz and Gratto are asking the county IDA for a sales tax abatement totaling $300,000 and a mortgage recording tax abatement of about $38,000. Reopening Cockaigne will be a boon to the Cherry Creek area. Their requests should be approved.
