Review Of Route 60 Options Should Be Considered Following Tragic Accident

We don’t yet know what caused an accident on Route 60 Monday that killed Lakewood’s Justin Romaniuk.

We do know, however, that Route 60 sees too many accidents and that something must be done to make Route 60 safer.

It doesn’t take much for a drive from Dunkirk to Jamestown to turn from routine to tragic on Route 60 given the speed vehicles travel on Route 60, the type of traffic on the road and route’s topography. There have been many suggestions to improve safety on Route 60 over the years. Some favor more passing lanes and turn lanes. Some say Route 60 needs to be wider. Others say traffic lights and consistent speed limits will make the road safer. County Executive Vince Horrigan, Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi and then-Dunkirk Mayor A.J. Dolce talked in the past about lobbying the state for money to upgrade Route 60 both to handle increased traffic flow between the county’s two major cities and to make the road safer.

State officials have said in the past that Route 60 doesn’t have enough of an accident rate to be a priority for reconstruction. A major reconstruction may indeed not be necessary — but local and state transportation officials should use Monday’s tragic accident to review all of the options available.
