Let’s Not Make The Same Mistake

If President Barack Obama manages to destroy the Islamic State terrorist organization through an international coalition, the odds are he will make the same mistake committed by his predecessor, former President George W. Bush.

Declaring “mission accomplished” after a few battlefield victories against ISIS, the inaccurate acronym by which the Islamic State usually is called, would be a terrible mistake.

For one thing, it probably would prompt leaders and people in some of the coalition countries to decide the United States is very good at asking for help with its problems – but not so good at aiding its allies.

ISIS has made headlines because of its conquests, its wealth in money, troops and weaponry, and its brutality. As if to reinforce that it is a threat to Americans, ISIS beheaded two U.S. journalists earlier this summer.

Our allies seem to agree ISIS is a threat. The French have offered to help with air strikes. Germany, reversing a longstanding tradition, plans to send weapons to ISIS foes in Iraq and Syria.

But here’s a question for you: How many terrorist organizations are there in the world, as recognized by countries they target?

Answer: About 155, and the vast majority are Islamic terrorists.

So if ISIS is destroyed, one could not blame leaders of Israel for asking why the U.S. coddles Hamas instead of working for its destruction. Russians might ask Washington for help with Chechen terrorists. And what about Al-Shabaab in Somalia, Boko Haram in Nigeria, Hezbollah in Lebanon, al-Badr in India and dozens of other lesser known terrorist groups throughout the world?

Liberals such as Obama once scoffed at warnings of an international communist conspiracy. Russian records prove it was very real.

Now, the president and even some in the news media refuse to use the words “Islamic terrorism” together. Yet in at least a dozen countries throughout the world, Islamic terrorists slaughter thousands of innocents every year. Why should people who live there – including many Muslims who would welcome U.S. aid – worry about helping our country against ISIS?

By all means, Obama should form a coalition to eliminate ISIS. Then, its members should offer their collective power to any other country where Islamic terrorists operate.
