On September 8, 2026, Jean Hartweg passed peacefully into the light and, after five years apart, was reunited with her beloved husband, Bill Hartweg, who passed away on August 11, 2021.
Jean and Bill were married on September 15, 1956, and spent nearly 65 years building a life together. More than husband and wife, they were best friends, constant companions, and truly two peas in a pod.
Their love for one another was something special to witness. Even after decades of marriage, they still held hands, sat close together, cuddled, laughed, and simply enjoyed being in each other's company. Their affection never faded with time. If anything, it seemed to deepen. For their family, that enduring love will always be one of the most beautiful things about them.
Jean had a creative spirit and a wonderful eye for beauty. She was an artist and decorator and had a deep appreciation for 18th-and 19th-century antiques. She loved finding pieces with history and character, and she had a special gift for making a home feel warm, beautiful, and uniquely her own.
Bill proudly served in the United States Air Force and later became the owner of the Credit Bureau of Jamestown, which he operated until 1995. He was devoted to his work, but his greatest commitment was always to Jean and their family.
Together, Jean and Bill loved the simple things that made life meaningful. They enjoyed birdwatching, camping, antiquing, spending time outdoors, and sharing new experiences together. They especially loved Allegany State Park, making it a fitting place for their family to one day say a final goodbye.
But more than any hobby, possession, or accomplishment, family was the center of their world. They loved their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren deeply.
They are survived by their three children, Laurie DeSantis, Matthew Hartweg (Sally), and Andrew Hartweg (Michele): five grandchildren. Corey Hartweg (Danielle), Allison Hartweg, Kaitlin Fortune, Mekenna Hartweg, and Mitchell Hartweg; and great-grandchildren, Hayden Hartweg, Carter Hartweg, Elena Fortune and Daxon Gullett, and Bill's brother, Bernard Hartweg.
Both Jean and Bill were cremated. Their family will gather privately at Allegany State Park for a remembrance and final farewell, honoring them together in a place that reflects their shared love of nature and the many years they spent side by side.
For those who knew them, it is difficult to think of Jean without Bill, or Bill without Jean. They lived their lives together, loved their family together, and faced the passing years together with a closeness that never left them.
