Sue C. Dearing Scharf

1938-2026

Sue C. Dearing Scharf, 87, of Westfield, NY, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026, at the Rouse Warren County Home in Youngsville, PA. She was born September 10, 1938, in Mayville, NY, the daughter of the late Claude and Beulah Hess Dearing.

Sue graduated from Mayville Central School in 1956 and was promptly hired by attorney Robert M. Laughlin, which began her lifelong career as a legal secretary. She remained at Brandt & Laughlin at the Westfield office for almost 30 years as the law firm expanded. She also worked for attorney John W. Beckman in Westfield and then retired from the Chautauqua County Law Department in Mayville in 1998. She and her husband owned and operated the family grape farm on Munson Road in Westfield.

Sue was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Bemus Point, NY. In former years she belonged to the Westfield Portland Union Cemetery Association, Literacy Volunteers and was a former auxiliary member of VFW Post 8647. She enjoyed reading the newspaper, cross-stitching, going for drives, watching and feeding the birds, her dogs, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sue is survived by her four children, Valerie (Steve) Thorsell of Bemus Point, NY, Floyd (Deanna) Scharf Jr. of Westfield, NY, Gail (Robert) Preston of Mayville, NY, and Thad Scharf of Westfield, NY, six granddaughters, Elizabeth (Mike) Kinderman, Laura (Josh Wright) Woodard, Lynne Fay (the late Anthony J Fay), Justina (Heather) Preston, Katherine (Corbin) Meleen, and Anna Sue (Devyn) Helak, fifteen great-grandchildren, two sisters, Judith Gilbert and Teresa Dearing and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd E. Scharf Sr., whom she married on May 23, 1959, and who died on May 26, 1994; two sisters, Anita Carlson and Mary Cannon; one brother, Ted Dearing; and a son-in-law, Jeffery Woodard.

Our family would like to express our gratitude to all the staff and physicians at the Rouse Warren County Home in Youngsville, PA for their exceptional care and compassion.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at the Freay Funeral Home in

Mayville (139 S. Erie St). The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm prior to the service. Burial will be in the Westfield Portland Union Cemetery.
