Robert David Young Sr.

Robert David Young Sr., 88, of Ellington passed away Monday, August 10, 2026 in Brooks Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 6, 1938 in Cherry Creek, the son of the late Robert G. and Genevieve Casten Young.

Dave was a 1956 graduate of Falconer High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1956 to 1984. While serving in the Navy he served as Radio Operator aboard the USS Merrick from 1957 to 1959; from 1960 to 1963 he served as Cryptographic Repairman and Circuit Control Operator at the Defense Communications Agency Area Control in Paris, France; from 1963 to 1966 he served as Communications Center Supervisor in Naples, Italy; 1966 to 1968 he served as Circuit Control Watch Section Supervisor at the Naval Communications Station in Washington, DC; 1968 to 1970 he served as Communications Center Watch Supervisor and Circuit Control Chief for the Sixth Fleet Flagship aboard the USS Little Rock; 1969 to 1973 he served as Communications Center Watch Supervisor aboard the USS Compass Island; and from 1973 t0 1984 he served as Chief Petty Officer in Charge for the US Navy Reserves Facility in Tallahassee, FL. After retiring from the Navy Dave was employed by Dawson Metal, MRC, and the Post Journal where he had the largest delivery route. Prior to retirement Dave owned and operated Young Expediting Service, Inc.

Dave was a member of the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department and Ellington Rod & Gun Club. He enjoyed spending time with family, grandchildren, woodworking, golfing, bowling, swimming, fishing, geocache and mowing his lawn. Dave served as the groundskeeper for the Town of Ellington, where his love of mowing was truly showcased. His family was truly the most important part of his life and spending time with them was his greatest gift to us. He was an avid Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Blue Jays fan.

Surviving is his wife, Wanda J. Rhinehart Young whom he married October 9, 1982 in Ellington; his children: Heather Young-Deyell (Floyd Bacon) of Ellington, Robert D. (Cheryl) Young Jr. of Texas, Dana (Rick) Gardner of Frewsburg, Jay (Mary) Young of Jamestown, Amanda Cross-Hemmer of Oregon; grandchildren: Marli Deyell, Kingston Deyell, Matthew (Arielle) Young, Kimberlynne (Nathan) Pratt, Rachel (Pete) Williams, Jonathan Young, Andrew (Chelsea) Young, Daniel (Zoe) Young, Joshua Young, Noah Young, Isaiah Young, Erin (Todd) Lewellen, Aimie (Ben) Boatwright, Kaylie (Andrew) Lindstrom, Morgan Gardner, Kamryn (Preston) Ramsey, Bruce Gardner, Branden Bacon, Bentleigh Bacon, Blake Bacon, Bryson Bacon, Ronan Hemmer; numerous great grandchildren; and a brother Richard (Diane) Young of Ellington.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jolayne Young and a brother, Gerald Young.

The funeral for Dave will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Falconer Funeral Home. Rev. Don Moore of Ellington Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Ellington.

Friends will be received by the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
