Richard A. “Rick” Sanders

1952-2026

Richard A. "Rick" Sanders, 74, of North Fort Myers, FL, formerly of Lakewood, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Hospice House in Cape Coral, FL, surrounded by his loving family.

Rick was born on June 19, 1952, in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late James and Phyllis Schutt Sanders.

He was a 1970 graduate of Southwestern Central School playing football & basketball.

On May 6, 1972, Rick married the love of his life, Debra "Debbie" Hollis Sanders. Together, they shared 54 years of marriage, building a life filled with family, laughter, friendship, and countless memories.

Rick devoted 39 years of his career to National Fuel Gas. He began his career as a meter reader in 1972 and worked his way through the company, retiring in 2011 as Assistant Superintendent. He was respected for his strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment throughout his many years with National Fuel.

A true outdoorsman, Rick found great enjoyment in hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was a member of the Jamestown Skeet Club, Ducks Unlimited, Jamestown Elks Lodge, and Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, and was a founding member of the LLAMA Club in Ashville. He also enjoyed reading and, perhaps most especially, woodworking. Rick was talented with his hands and took great pride in making furniture, special pieces for family and friends. These creations will remain treasured reminders of his talent and love.

Above all else, Rick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He loved his family unconditionally and cherished the time he spent with them. His grandchildren held a particularly special place in his heart, and he treasured every moment with Hunter, Noah, and Jade. His family will forever remember his stories, his sense of humor, his generosity, and the love he so freely gave.

In addition to his beloved wife, Debbie, Rick is survived by his daughters, Susan (Steven) Umstead of Lockport, NY, and Julie (Adam) Galaska of Rush, NY; his grandchildren, Hunter and Noah Umstead and Jade Galaska; and his brothers, Michael (Mary) Sanders of Hot Springs, AR, and Patrick (Shari) Sanders of Palm Coast, FL. He is also survived by many family members and close friends who will miss him dearly.

Rick was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Lynn; his parents and grandparents.

Rick leaves behind a lifetime of love, memories, friendships, and a family who will carry his memory in their hearts forever. His greatest legacy will not be measured by his career or accomplishments, but by the love he gave to his family and the lasting impact he had on the lives of those who knew him.

A celebration of Rick's life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hope Hospice at morehope.org, Lakewood Library, or a charity of your choice.
