Martha Mary Hendrickson Wirsen

Martha Mary Hendrickson Wirsen, 83, of Jamestown, passed away peacefully at home on August 24, 2026, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

She was born in Jamestown on September 5, 1942, to the late Jerome "Heiny" and Mary Hendrickson. A member of the Jamestown High School Class of 1960, Martha worked for National Fuel and Quality Pharmacies before retiring as manager of her family's business, J.K. Wirsen Construction Company, Inc., where she helped run the company for more than 30 years.

Martha found great joy in caring for her grandchildren when they were young and cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. She was a lifelong member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Together with her husband, Jim, she spent many years as a member and volunteer with War Vets Recreation and VFW Post 557 in Bemus Point. Martha served as an officer of the VFW for many years, including secretary as well as president. Through these organizations, Martha and Jim formed many lasting friendships that meant a great deal to them.

Martha will be remembered by her husband of 60 years, James K. "Jim" Wirsen, whom she married on April 16, 1966; her children, Jennifer (John Thurston) Wirsen Thurston and Michael James Wirsen; her grandchildren, Emma Louise (Ben Hanford) Wirsen, Ethan Knorr Wirsen, and Seth Michael Thurston; her sisters, Sally Twichell, Kathy Calimeri, and Margaret DiDomenico; her sister-in-law, Mary Schwartz; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Fitzgerald.

A private family service will be held, with burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Martha's warmth, devotion to her family, and many friendships will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
