James W. Kent “Jim”

James W. Kent "Jim", 92, the Town of Ellington, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the Star Hospice House, Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care with his family at his side.

He was born January 31, 1934 in the Town of Napoli, the son of the late Lewis and Myrtle (Crumb) Kent. Jim attended Little Valley High School and worked on the family Dairy Farm in Napoli.

Jim retired from the Town of Ellington, where he served from 1970 to 1995, where he worked for the Town Highway Department and later served as Town Highway Superintendent. Earlier on he had worked for Allegany State Park, Art Metal Products and Fancher Furniture in Jamestown.

He attended the Ellington Congregational Church where he also served on the church board and as past board chairman, served on the Parent Teacher Association of the Rudolph Donn Elementary school in Ellington and was also a member of the NYS Highway Superintendents Association.

Jim enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and his grandchildren, camping and boating on Lake Ontario (Port Maitland).

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, June (Wendell) Kent, whom he married on July 25, 1958, a daughter; Mary L. Caswell of Frewsburg, two sons; James M. Kent of Randolph and Loren T. Kent of Conewango Valley, three foster daughters; Dawn Frank, Nancy Unold and Cindy Schmitt, two grandchildren, Jaime Caswell-Smith and Benjamin Kent Sr., five great grandchildren; Evan, Ethan, Ryan and Madelyn Smith and Benjamin Kent Jr., as well as an aunt, Grace Kent.

Jim is preceded in death by two sister's; Delores Nease and infant; Grace Ann Kent, two brothers, infant, Charles Kent and George Kent.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 P.M. September 3, 2026 in the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church St, Randolph. Family and friends will be received 2 hours prior from 5-7 PM. Rev. Jennifer Delahoy will officiate and his son Loren Kent will deliver the Eulogy. Inurnment will be in the Randolph Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
